CAMH's President and CEO Dr. Catherine Zahn had the honour of being one of 150 flagbearers to participate in the Invictus Games National Flag Tour, which began its journey on August 16th in Victoria, BC, and concludes in Toronto on September 22.
The games, which take place from September 23-30 in Toronto, celebrate the resilience of combat veterans who have sustained physical and/or mental injury during their service. Over 500 competitors from 17 countries will participate in 12 adaptive sports.
Catherine brought the Invictus Games flag from Queen’s Park to the Sunnybrook Hospital Veteran’s Centre, where she met Canadian veterans who served in World War 2 and the Korean War
The games began as a project by His Royal Highness Prince Harry, who was inspired to create an event that showed how sport could help wounded warriors physically, psychologically and socially. The word ‘Invictus’ is Latin for ‘Unconquered’; a word that symbolizes the strength of the human spirit when faced with adversity.
Tickets for the events are still available on the website, and a handful of free events are also planned over the course of the week. The full schedule of events is available at InvictusGames2017.com
Prince Harry will also be making a stopover at CAMH on Saturday, September 23 to learn about the CAMH programs and to meet and greet staff, clients, and members of the community.
