Course Overview
SBIRT is an online, self-directed course that presents an overview of screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment for problem gambling. It is intended for mental health and addictions service providers. The course provides information about how SBIRT has been adapted to address problem gambling, shares recommendations of screening tools, and explores how to conduct a brief intervention using case studies and examples. The course will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete.
Learning Objectives
After successfully completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify brief and full screening tools for problem gambling;
- Identify how to respond to screening results;
- Identify the goals of a brief intervention;
- Differentiate between the four steps in the brief negotiated interview model;
- Name three motivational interviewing skills that can be incorporated in a brief intervention;
- Identify actions for each of the four steps; and,
- Identify when it is appropriate to make a referral to treatment.
Certification and Accreditation
This course has been accredited by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation for 9.0 Continuing Education Units.
