Course Overview
ACGG is an online, intermediate, self-directed course intended for mental health and addictions service providers. This self-directed course has two streams (one for gambling and one for gaming) and provides an overview of three key areas of counselling: the therapeutic alliance, values, and goal setting. Throughout the course, there is a focus on an interactive experience through six computer-based simulations where the learner will act as a counsellor to different clients. In these simulations, the learner will make decisions about what to say to help clients through their therapeutic journey. There is also an opportunity to reflect and discuss concepts with other learners. Learners can complete one or both streams; each stream will take approximately three hours to complete.
Although course content is the same for both the gambling and gaming streams, the simulated clients are different. Therefore, you may receive up to two letters of completion for completing the course with different clients.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, learners will have demonstrated some level of proficiency in the following three foundational areas for clients struggling with problem gambling and/or gaming:
- Creating and maintaining a therapeutic alliance with gambling and/or gaming clients.
- Exploring values with clients struggling with gambling and/or gaming.
- Setting gambling and/or gaming-related goals.
Certification and Accreditation
This course has been accredited by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation for 3.0 Continuing Education Units/hours for each stream (3.0 CEUs for gambling and 3.0 CEUs for gaming).
